Katrina Cottages are small residential shelters designed and marketed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. They were designed as a response to the inadequacies of trailers issued to flood victims by FEMA. The aesthetics of Katrina Cottages resemble traditional homes in the area in appearance, scaled-down in size to reduce costs and ease construction so that multiple units can be built quickly as needed.

Rain gardens catch stormwater runoff from roofs, sidewalks, parking lots and roads. Rather than rushing off into a storm sewer or a local waterway, the rainwater collects in a rain garden and helps to protect neighborhoods from flooding and drainage problems. Rain gardens also help protect streams and lakes from pollutants carried by urban stormwater such as lawn fertilizers, pesticides and numerous harmful substances that wash off roofs and roads.

X - codes (also known as Katrina Crosses) but officially called "search codes" by FEMA. These codes were placed on homes when FEMA staff assessed homes after Hurricane Katrina.
This is what it means:
The shorthand painted to the left identified the rescue team. The top of the X delineated the date the team arrived. Moving clockwise, the next number summarized the hazards found within. Then, in that last quadrant, at the bottom of the X, rescue workers listed the number of people found inside.

MQVN Community Development Corporation is a nonprofit organization created in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to address the issues of the Vietnamese-New Orleanian community in New Orleans East. Many of the needs identified directly related to major infrastructure destroyed by Katrina. This includes the closing of two hospitals in the New Orleans East area and the lack of basic retail services that once thrived in the community which serves the Vietnamese-American, African-American, and Latino communities.

We met with organizations who shared how they were responding to the impact of Hurricane Katrina – 4 years later.
Two common threads among the many organizations and individuals we encountered were resiliency & agency – despite the neglect of governmental responsibility and support.
I left NOLA with a profound sense of place and a deeper understanding of environmental injustice & racism.
