The Packard Automotive Plant is a former automobile-manufacturing factory. It opened in 1903, and was considered one of the most modern automobile manufacturing facilities in the world at the time. The factory complex closed in 1958, though other businesses operated on the premises or used it for storage until the late 1990s.

Earthworks Urban Farm, founded in 1998, is a program of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.
Inspired by his relationship with neighborhood youth (whom he witnessed getting groceries from the gas station), Capuchin Friar Brother Rick Samyn decided to help young people understand what good food was, and where it came from. The garden was created to connect people to each other, the land, and their food.

The Gateway to Freedom: International Memorial to the Underground Railroad
Detroit, whose code name was “Midnight” on the Underground Railroad, was an important location on the network. The Detroit River separates the United States from Canada, where slavery was abolished through the British Imperial Act of 1833. Though slavery was also illegal in Michigan when it was admitted to the Union in 1837, bounty hunters crossing state lines still posed a threat to black residents of Detroit. Fugitive slaves set their sights on what lay across its border: the city of Windsor, Ontario.

The Heidelberg Project is an outdoor project created in 1986 by artist Tyee Guyton. It started witha series of houses on Detroit's Heidelberg Street being painted with bright colorful dots and attaching salvaged items to the houses as a way to demonstrate the power of creativity in creating hope and a bright vision for the future.

In some ways being in Detroit felt like a homecoming as I finally - after all these years - had the opportunity to be in the very place where Grace Lee Boggs spent the majority of her life crafting and grounding her movement work.
It was inspiring witnessing seemingly ordinary people doing extraordinary things in their communities. I left Detroit with a new perspective on the power of informal networks and was reminded of “what it means to be a more human, human being.”
