In her autobiography, My Story, Rosa Parks said:

“People always say that I didn't give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn't true. I was not tired physically, or no more tired than I usually was at the end of a working day. I was not old, although some people have an image of me as being old then. I was forty-two. No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”

Between the Civil War and World War II, thousands of African Americans were lynched in the United States. Lynchings were violent and public acts of torture that traumatized black people throughout the country and were largely tolerated by state and federal officials. EJI has documented more than 4000 racial terror lynchings in 12 Southern states between the end of Reconstruction in 1877 and 1950.

EJI is working with communities to commemorate and recognize the traumatic era of lynching by collecting soil from lynching sites across the country. These jars of collected soil serve as a visible memory of the history of racial injustice in the US.

The Freedom Riders were a group consisting of students and civil rights activists who used nonviolent tactics and rode interstate buses into the segregated southern states to test the United States Supreme Court decisions Boynton v. Virginia (1960), which declared that segregation in interstate travel, including bus station facilities, violated the Interstate Commerce Act. Despite the ruling, law enforcement officials within some local jurisdictions in southern states still supported segregation between African Americans and European Americans on interstate buses, and many citizens in the South also supported the segregationist stance within their towns.

On May 20, 1961, the Freedom Riders were attacked by a local mob at this location, which was formerly the Montgomery Greyhound Bus Station.

Resembling an inland island, Gee’s Bend is surrounded on three sides by the Alabama River. The seven hundred or so inhabitants of this small, rural community are mostly descendants of slaves, and for generations they worked the fields belonging to the local Pettway plantation.
